The Pelvis and Hip Joints
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What four bones make up the pelvis or pelvic girdle? | The sarcrum, the coccyx, and the two "hip" bones : ilium and ischium |
| What are the functions of the hip bone? | Supports the weight of the body, protects pelvic organs, and aids in motion during gait |
| What is the difference in the male pelvis and the female pelvis? | The male pelvis is more narrow, deeper and funnel shaped. The female pelvis is wider, more shallow and cylindrical. |
| What are the three joints of the pelvis? | Lumbosacral, Sacroiliac, Symphasis pubis |
| Located in the midline of the body, Connects the right and left pubic bones, Little movement, Becomes more mobile during childbirth | Symphasis pubis joint |
| A synovial joint, Transmits weight from the upper body through the vertebral column to the lower extremity, Designed for stability | Sacroiliac joint (SI joint) |
| Bony landmarks of the pelvic girdle | Iliac crest, Posterior superior iliac spine(PSIS), Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS), Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS), and Ischial tuberosity |
| Posterior projection of the iliac crest | Posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS) |
| Anterior projection of the iliac crest | Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) |
| The superior ridge of the ilium | Iliac Crest |
| Projection just inferior to the ASIS | Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) |
| Large projection on the inferior ischium, Weight bearing surface when sitting | Ischial tuberosity |
| Alignment of the pelvis | the ASIS and the PSIS should be in the same transverse plane |
| The joint between the acetabulum of the pelvis and the head of the femur | The hip joint |
| A deep, cup shaped socket | The Acetabulum |
| 2/3 of the head fits into the acetabulum Covered by very thick cartilage | Head of the femur |
| a ball and socket joint that has 3 degrees of freedom | The hip joint |
| the femur moves on the pelvis | Open chained movement |
| the pelvis moves on the femur | Closed chained movement |
