Classification
Classifications of Organisms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Taxonomy | science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms |
| Classification | division of organisms into groups or classes based on specific characteristics |
| Levels_of_Classification | today, scientists use an eight-level system to classify living things based on shared characteristics: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species |
| Carolus Linnaeus | Swedish scientist who founded modern taxonomy |
| Binomial_Nominclature | Two-part scientific name for a species |
| Dichotomous_Key | a tool used to identify organsims that consists of answering a series of questions |
| Domain_Archaea | single-celled prokaryotes that do not have a nucleus and can live in extreme environments such as the hot springs in Yellowstone National Park |
| Domain_Bacteria | prokaryotic bacteria that can be found in water, soil, and the human body. Some bacteria fight disease in the human body while others cause disease (pathogenic bacteria) |
| Domain_Eukarya | organisms whose cells have a nucleus and organelles contained within a cell membrane: includes kingdoms Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Anamalia |
| Kingdom_Protista | mostly one-celled eukaryotic organisms that are different from plants, animals and fungi. Includes protozoans, algae, slime molds, euglenoids |
| Kingdom_Fungi | nongreen and eukaryotic organisms, reproduce by spores, get food by breaking down substances in their environment, cannot move around; reproduce by spores, restore nutrients to the soil |
| Kingdom_Plantae | complex multicellular organisms that are usually green have cell walls made of cellulose, cannot move around, use sun's energy to make glucose by photosynthesis |
| Kingdom_Anamalia | complex multicelliular organisms that lack cell walls, can usually move around, and quickly respond to their environment |
| binary_fission | method of asexual reproduction in which a single-celled organism splits into two single-celled organisms |
| endospore | thick-walled protective spore that forms inside a bacterial cell and resists harsh conditions |
| internal_fertilization | sperm and egg are joined inside the body |
| external fertilization | sperm and egg are joined outside the body |
| lichen | combinatin of fungus and algae that grow together |
| vascular | plant that has tissues that conduct water and food from one part of the plant to another |
| nonvascular | lack tissues to conduct materials from one part of plant to another; liverworts, hornworts, mosses |
| gymnosperms | vascular, nonflowering seed plants; produce seeds in cones |
| angiosperms | vascular, flowering plants that produce seeds |
