Crisis and Disaster

The outcome of a crisis depends on these three things. Perception of event, Situational supports and Coping style.
Include leaving home during late adolescence, marriage, the birth of a child, retirement, and the death of a parent. Maturational Crisis
Include the loss or change of a job, the death of a loved one, an abortion, a change in financial status, divorce, and severe physical or mental illness. Situational Crisis
Results from Natural disaster, National disaster, or a crime of violence. Adventitious Crisis
↑anxiety stimulates the use of problem-solving techniques and defense mechanisms in an effort to solve the problem and ↓anxiety. Phase 1
Usual defense mech. fail l/t↑anxiety l/t extreme discomfort, DISORGANIZED, trial and error attempts. Phase 2
Trial & error mech. fail l/t severe panic levels, WITHDRAWAL AND FLIGHT. Phase 4
Problem not solved, Personality disorganized, depression, confusion, violence against other and self. Phase 4
The goal of crisis intervention. Pre-crisis level of functioning
Promotes mental health and reduces mental illness to decrease the incidence of crisis (Prevention). Primary Care
Establishes intervention during an acute crisis to prevent prolonged anxiety from diminishing personal effectiveness and personality organization. Secondary Care
Provides support for those who have experienced a severe crisis and are now recovering from a disabling mental state. Tertiary Care
