Chapter 9.2 Minerals
Minerals Vocabulary Ch 9.2 GHS Earth Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Mineralogists | Earth Scientists who use special equipment to identify minerals |
| Characteristics of Minerals | Color, Luster, Streak, Cleavage and Fracture, Hardness, Crystal Shape, Density |
| Luster | Light reflected from the surface of a mineral |
| Streak | The color of the mineral in powdered form |
| Cleavage | Tendency to split easily along the flat surfaces |
| Fracture | Minerals break unevenly into irregular pieces |
| Hardness | The ability to resist scratching; Mohs hardness scale (1-10) |
| Density | The ratio of mass to volume; D = m/V |
| Special properties of minerals | Magnetism, Flourescence and Phosphorescence, Double refraction, Radioactivity |
| Flourescence | Ability to glow under ultraviolet light |
| Phosphorescence | Minerals that continue to glow after being exposed to ultraviolet light |
| Refraction | Light rays beng as they pass through transparent minerals |
| Double refraction | Produces a double image of any object viewed through them |
