Joints

Anatomy Final

TermDefinition
Fibrous joints joins bones together by fibrous tissue and lack a joint cavity.
Cartilaginous joints joins bones together by cartilage and lack joint cavity.
Synovial joints fluid-containing joint cavity that separates articulating bones.
Amount of movement functional classification is based on what that is allowed a the joint cavity.
Synarthroses immovable joints.
Amphiarthroses slightly movable joints.
Diarthroses freely movable joints.
Sutures Occur between bones of skull, use very short connective tissue fibers.
Syndesmoses bones are connected by a ligament.
Gomphosis peg-in-socket fibrous joint.
Synchondroses a bar or plate of hyaline cartilage uniting the bones, such as epiphyseal plate.
Symphyses articular surfaces are covered with articular cartilage that is then fused to an intervening pad or plate of fibrocartilage (ex: pubic symphysis)
Articular cartilage Covers the end of articulating bones.
Joint (synovial) cavity space between that is filled with synovial fluid.
Articular capsule two layered, encloses the joint cavity.
Synovial fluid slippery fluid that fills all free space within the joint cavity.
Reinforcing ligaments cross synovial joints to strengthen the joint.
Bursae (tendon sheaths) bags of lubricant that reduce friction at synovial joints
