|---|---|
| Fibrous joints | joins bones together by fibrous tissue and lack a joint cavity. |
| Cartilaginous joints | joins bones together by cartilage and lack joint cavity. |
| Synovial joints | fluid-containing joint cavity that separates articulating bones. |
| Amount of movement | functional classification is based on what that is allowed a the joint cavity. |
| Synarthroses | immovable joints. |
| Amphiarthroses | slightly movable joints. |
| Diarthroses | freely movable joints. |
| Sutures | Occur between bones of skull, use very short connective tissue fibers. |
| Syndesmoses | bones are connected by a ligament. |
| Gomphosis | peg-in-socket fibrous joint. |
| Synchondroses | a bar or plate of hyaline cartilage uniting the bones, such as epiphyseal plate. |
| Symphyses | articular surfaces are covered with articular cartilage that is then fused to an intervening pad or plate of fibrocartilage (ex: pubic symphysis) |
| Articular cartilage | Covers the end of articulating bones. |
| Joint (synovial) cavity | space between that is filled with synovial fluid. |
| Articular capsule | two layered, encloses the joint cavity. |
| Synovial fluid | slippery fluid that fills all free space within the joint cavity. |
| Reinforcing ligaments | cross synovial joints to strengthen the joint. |
| Bursae (tendon sheaths) | bags of lubricant that reduce friction at synovial joints |
