QuestionAnswer
What makes up the urinary system? Kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra
What is the function of the urinary system? Help maintain pH, blood volume, pressure and concentration (osmolarity) of electrolytes.
Why do we need Na? It is involved in the electroconductivity of the heart and also electrical potentials in the brain
Why is pH important? pH affects our ventilation & how proteins function because if a protein changes shape, it wont function anymore.
Why are kidneys important? They reabsorb glucose and excrete wastes. Also release renin and EPO.
What do kidneys regulate? acid base balance, electrolyte concentration, blood pressure and plasma volume.
What hormones do the kidneys release> Renin, aldosterone, EPO, angiotensin 2, natriuretic peptide, ADH
Where do kidneys receive blood from? Receives blood from the renal artery, then the blood is filtered and picks up solution. The blood exits through the renal vein
Where is the nephron found? The renal cortex.
Blood flow in the kidney? Renal artery sends blood to the renal cortex where it splits to go in between pyramids and turn into acuate arteries and then interlobular arteries.
Where does liquid that isn't picked up go? The collecting duct in the renal medulla.
What is the glomerulus? Ball of capillaries that the afferent arteriole divides into. You lose everything here and it enter the nephron.
