Down-regulation Decrease in number of receptors in response to excess hormones or neurotransmitters
Endocrine Gland Gland that secretes hormones into interstitial fluid and then blood
Endocrinology Science concerned with the structure and functions of endocrine glands and diagnosis of disorders
Hormone Endocrine cells that alter the physiological activity of target cells of the body.
Synergist effect two or more hormones acting together is more than one acting alone
What do estrogens and progesterones do? Regulate female reproductive cycle, maintain pregnancy, prepare mammary glands for lactation and promote development of female secondary sex characteristics.
What does relaxin do? Flexibility of the pubic symphysis and dilates cervix.
What does testosterone do? Stimulates descent of testes, regulates spermatogenesis, promotes secondary mal sex characteristics.
What is the GAS response? General Adaptation Syndrome. It is a sequence of changes from long lasting stress.
1st stage of GAS? 1. Fight or Flight- SNS system, initiated by nerve impulses from hypothalamus to the SNS causes a release of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Results are immediate and brief.
2nd stage of GAS? 2. Resistance Reaction- regulated by hormones, hormones from the hypothalamus stimulate the anterior pituitary to release specific hormones. (ACTH, hGH, TSH)
3rd stage of GAS? 3. Exhaustion- energy is depleted, cortisol release leads to muscle wasting, suppression of immune response, failure of pancreatic beta cells
