QuestionAnswer
What are the 2 major parts of the nephron? renal corpuscle (glomerulus and bowmans capsule) and renal tubule (PCT, loop of henle and DCT)
What is the main function of the juxtamedullary nephrons? Enable kidneys to excrete diluted or concentrated urine
Three steps of urine formation? Filtration, tubular reabsorption and tubular secretion.
What is the purpose of glomerular filtration? Filters blood plasma from the glomerulus ino bowmans capsule and then into the renal tubule.
Purpose of tubular reabsorption? Reabsorbs solutes and 99% water so water and solutes return to bood
Purpose of tubular secretion? Secretes wastes, drugs and excess ions. Tubular secretion removes substances from blood and puts them in urine.
Where does the majority of reabsorption occur? PCT
What is the purpose of filtration, reabsorption and secretion processes? Help maintain homeostasis of bloods volume and composititon
Hormones that are involved in the reabsorption and secretion in renal tubules? Angiotensin 2, ADH, aldosterone,, ANP, PTH
What is the function of the juxtaglomerular apparatus? Helps regulate BP
What is glomerular filtrate? Fluid filtered from glomerulus into bowmans capsule
Amount of urine eliminated daily? 1-2L
What is glomerular filtration rate? amount of filtrate formed in all the renal corpuscles of both kidneys each minute
If GFR is too high, what happens? You lose necessary substances in urine
If GFR is too low, what happens? Toxins may build up because they are being reabsorbed
What effects do angiotensin 2 and atrial natriuretic peptide on GFR? Angiotensin 2 decreases GFR and ANP increases it/
How long is the urethra in females? In Males? 4cm in females and 20 cm in males/
Abnormal cells in urine? Albumin, glucoe, RBC's, ketones, bilirubin casts, microbes
