Unit 11: Classification & Ecology

Prokaryote An organism lacking membrane-bound organelles and a nucleus
Eukaryote An organism with membrane-bound organelles and a nucleus
Multicellular An organism composed of more than one cell
Unicellular An organism composed of just one cell
Kingdom Animalia One of the six kingdoms of life. Animals are multicellular, heterotrophic, motile eukaryotes. Examples of animals are humans, insects, sponges and fish.
Kingdom Protista One of the six kingdoms of life. Protists are unicellular eukaryotes. Some are autotrophic like algae. Some are heterotrophic like amoebas.
Kingdom Fungi One of the six kingdoms of life. Fungi are multicellular, heterotrophic, non-motile eukaryotes. The consumers that use absorption. Examples of fungi are mushrooms and yeast.
Kingdom Plantae One of the six kingdoms of life. Plants are autotrophic (photosynthetic) , multicellular, non-motile eukaryotes.
Kingdom Eubacteria Group of prokaryotes that have cells walls and a variety of structures. These are the only bacteria we come in contact with. Some species of eubacteria cause sickness in humans.
Kingdom Archaebacteria One of the six kingdoms of life, that contains prokaryotic, unicellular organisms that are found in very harsh environments where there is an absence of other life.

Extremophile Archaebacteria that live in extreme environments
Oldest life forms on Earth Eubacteria
Autotroph An organism that makes it own food through the process of photosynthesis. Also known as a producer.
Heterotroph
Producer An organism that makes it own food through the process of photosynthesis. Also known as an autotroph.
