| Binomial Nomenclature | the system for naming organisms in which each organism is given a unique two-part scientific name |
| Genus | a classification grouping that consists of a number of similar, closely related species |
| Species | a group of organisms that are physically similar and can mate with each other and produce offspring |
| Prokaryotes | an organism whose cells lack a nucleus and some other cell structures |
| Archaea | unicellular prokaryotes that are classified in their own domain since their structure and chemical makeup differ from bacteria |
| Eukaryotes | an organism whose cells contain a nucleus |
| Proteins | large organic molecule made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sometimes sulfur |
| Enzymes | a protein that speeds up chemical reactions in a living thing |
| Heredity | the passing of traits from parents to offspring |
| Alleles | the different forms of a gene |
| Dominant | an allele whose trait always shows up in the organism (bully) |
| Recessive | an allele that is masked when a dominate allele is present (wimp) |
| Hybrid | an organism that has two different alleles for a trait (a mixture-Bb) |
| Purebred | the offspring of many generations that have the same traits (BB, bb) |
| Probability | a number that describes how likely it is an event will occur |
| Genotype | an organism’s genetic makeup (Bb-letters) |
| Phenotype | an organism’s physical appearance, or visible traits (blond hair) |
| Meiosis | the process that occurs in the formation of sex cells by which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half |
| Adaption | behavior or physical characteristic that allows an organism to survive or reproduce in its environment |
| Evolution | the gradual change in a species over time |
| Extinction | the disappearance of all members of a species from Earth |
| Virus | a tiny, nonliving particle that invades and then reproduces inside a living cell |
| Bacteria | single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus, prokaryotes |
| Protist | a eukaryotic organism that cannot be classified as an animal, plant, or fungus |
| Cilia | the hairlike projections on the outside of cells that move in a wavelike manner |
