law of conservation of mass states that in ordinary chemical and physical changes, mass is not created or destroyed but is only transformed into different substances
atom smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element

mixture contains a variety of elements and compounds that are not chemically combined with each other
pure substance elements and compounds
heterogeneous mixture is one that does not have a uniform composition

liquid substance has a definite volume but not a definite shape
gas doesn't have a definite volume or shape
freezing a liquid becoming a solid
melting solid becoming liquid
evaporation a particles that are surface of a liquid and gain enough energy to become liquid to a gas
boiling rapid change from liquid to gas
condensation gas becoming a liquid
sublimation from solid state directly into gas
deposition gas becoming directly a solid
