| consumers | living things in an ecosystem that must eat to get the energy they need |
| food chain | shows how the consumers in an ecosystem are connected to each other by what they eat |
| decomposers | consumers that eat dead plants or animals |
| food web | shows the relationships between different food chains in one ecosystem |
| competition | contest among plants and animals for resources |
| extinct | the last individual in the population dies |
| endangered | likely to become extinct |
| threatened | likely to become endangered |
| biome | large ecosystem such as desert, rainforest, tundra |
| climate zone | region where temperature, rainfall, and sunlight are similar |
| tropical rain forest | biome near the equator that is always warm and rains nearly every day |
| deciduous forest | biome with trees that shed their leaves each year |
| grasslands | biome with moderate rainfall that has tall grasses |
| desert | dry biome that has very little precipitation |
| taiga | cold biome with forest of needle-leaved evergreens |
| tundra | cold biome that is flat and treeless with long winters |
