Ocean tools

TermDefinition
gravity core samples less than 10 meters deep and pulls out a tube of sediment to explore historical conditions.
secchi disk used to estimate the transparency or turbidity of the water using a black and white disc
dip net collecting specimens floating and swimming off a dock and/or side of vessel with a quick scoop
sediment sieves analyzes grain sediment size to determine type and erosion possibilities
phytoplankton nets triangular nets for collecting the diverse photosynthesizers within the water column
neuston net large mesh net for capturing larger zooplankton often along the surface as it is towed behind the boat
niskin bottle Used to collect water samples from discrete depths where they can be analyzed for phophates, nitrates, silicates and other
shipek grab samples sediment in soft ooze, clay, sand or gravel bottoms that are relatively flat.
hydrophone takes acoustic measurements by lowering it down into water column
dredge Drag behind the boat to collect specimens from the ocean bottom
global positioning system GPS: uses satellites to determine exact location
current meter instrument for measuring the rate, force and direction of flowing water under the surface
trawl net using otter boards to spread out the net, it captures large samples from different depths and often the bottom
hydrometer used to measure the densities of the water
ROV remotely operated vehicle: robotic vehicle operated by a person aboard the surface vessel while it is unoccupied
Drift bottle Charts ocean currents by floating around in the water with a sensor
plankton net cone shaped net with a collecting base at the base
refractometer sued to measure salt concentration by looking at light bending as it pass through the water column
Self contained underwater breathing apparatus SCUBA; has tank of air and regulator that allows a person to explore the water without assistance from the boat
grab sampler used to scoop up a piece of the ocean floor
nansen bottle collects sub surface water samples using a tripping mechanism to flip and collect the water
salinometer hydrometer that measures the density to determine salt concentration of the water
