Digestive System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What part of our body begins the digestive processes? | The mouth |
| What liquid in the mouth contains enzymes to help us break down food before swallowing? | Saliva |
| What is the esophagus? | The esophagus is the tube that connects our mouths to our stomachs so that food is directed downwards. |
| Why is the small intestine called the small intestine? | The small intestine is longer than the large intestine, but it is narrower/skinnier around so that's where it gets its name. |
| Can the stomach stretch? | Yes; our stomachs are always stretching when we are eating food. The stomach shrinks back to its normal size after the food moves to the small intestine. |
| Name the three main types of teeth. | Incisors, Molars, and Canines |
| Why are the incisor teeth shaped differently from the molars? | The incisor teeth are designed to bite or cut food while the molars are designed to grind and mash-up food. |
| Why are the canine teeth pointy? | The canine teeth have a sharper point to allow us to tear our food easier. (Think: We use these teeth to help us tear tough beef jerky.) |
| What happens to food when it is in the small intestine? | While in the small intestine, food is chemically broken down as nutrients from the food are taken out and put into our blood stream. Water is also taken out of our food and moves into the blood stream. |
| What is an enzyme? | A small protein molecule that helps our bodies break down food. |
| How does food move down the esophagus even when people are in space without gravity? | Our esophagus uses peristalsis to squeeze the food down to the stomach. (Think of an Easter egg getting squeezed down a tube sock little by little). |
| Why doesn't our stomach eat itself because of the strong acid in it? | Our stomach has a thick layer of mucus that protects the lining from the acid. Our stomach lining is growing back every 3-4 days. |
| Why do we make a lot of saliva? | Saliva helps our bodies carry the dry food down to our stomach so that it doesn't get stuck in our esophagus. It also starts to break down food. |
| Why doesn't food go down our windpipe (trachea) when we swallow it? | We have a valve or "lever" that covers the entrance to the windpipe when we swallow food. |
| What produces saliva for our mouth? | The salivary glands. |
