ecology the study of relationships between living things and their environment
habitat the natural environment where an animal or plant lives
ecosystem everything in a particular environment, both living and non-living
biodiversity having a variety of plants and animals living in an ecosystem
naturalist a person who studies living things in nature
endangered in danger of becoming extinct
wilderness a wild and natural area where no people live
reserve an area of land where plants and animals are given special protection
extinct when a plant or animal species dies out completely
petrified slowly changed into stone over time
erode to wear away over time due to wind, water, or ice
producers a living thing that makes its own food
consumers a living thing that eats other living things
decomposers a living thing that eats dead plant and animal matter
preditor an animal that lives by hunting other animals
prey animals that are hunted by other animals for food
carnivore a meat eating animal
omnivore an animal that eats both plants and meat
herbivore a plant eating animal
photosynthesis the process by which plants use the sun's energy to make their own food
