Earthquakes

TermDefinition
stress a force that acts an rock to change it's shape or volume.
tension the stress force that pulls on the crust and thins rock in the middle.
comprestion The stress force that squeezes rock until it folds or breaks.
shearing The stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions.
normal fault where rock is pulled apart by tension in earths crust, normal faults form.
reverse fault A type of fault where the hanging wall slides upward; caused by compression the crust.
strike-slip fault A type of fault in which rock on either side moves past each other sideways with little up or down motion.
plateau A large landform that has high elevation and a more or less level surface.
