What 3 things is urine composed of? Urine is composed of water, electrolytes and waste material collected from the cells of the body.
Is urine clean or contaminated? Urine is sterile as it leaves the body, but quickly begins to grow bacterial cultures soon after being expelled.
How much blood flows through the kidneys? Roughly 20% of the total volume of the blood pumped each minute flows through the kidneys for cleansing.
What is the major component of urine? Water: - 95% of urine is water
What is urea? a product of liver metabolism, is a key component of urine
How is urea made? This is made when amino acids in the blood are converted to energy holding compounds
What is the effect of urea on the body? urea is toxic to the cells and must be removed from the bloodstream
Where does urine Ammonia come from? nucleic acid breakdown in the digestive tract releases ammonia
How does Creatinine form? It is a product of muscle cell metabolism
How do Ketones form? They are organic molecules that result from the breakdown of fat molecules.
Why might keytones in the urine be normal? if the body is low on glucose (perhaps from a low carb diet)
Why might diabetics tend to have high ketone levels? because they tend to burn body fat since the cells may not have access to glucose from the bloodstream.
What might amber-yellow urine mean? the urine contains urobilinogen-caused by bacterial action on bilirubin in the intestines
What might dark yellow / orange urine mean? possibly concentrated urine caused by dehydration
What might red urine indicate? blood cells in the urine indicate bleeding in the kidney, poss from kidney disease
What might green or blue urine mean? presence of bilirubin, urinary tract infection
What might brown or black urine mean? : digested blood, cancer of the kidney
What might white or cloudy white urine indicate? the whiteness is caused by excess WBCs which indicate an infection in the renal system.
Who might have purple urine? only seen in patients with a catheter bag, caused by bacteria growing in the bag or tube.
