| hibernation | period of decreased activity and body temperature |
| dormancy | state of inactivity when organism is not growing |
| migration | relatively long-distance movement on a seasonal basis |
| territory | geographical area defended by an organism necessary for food, water, shelter, mates |
| mimicry | similarity of one species to another which protects one or both |
| bioluminescence | production and emission of light by a living organism |
| auxins | stimulates lenthening of cells for growth, triggered by light, results in phototropism |

| ethylene | causes ripening |
| cytokinins | stimulates cytokinesis and growth of side branches |
| estivation | reduction in metabolism in response to heat |

| cryptic coloration | color matches environment; example = chameleon |
| countershading | light on bottom, dark on top; example = fish |
| disruptive coloration | patterns like stripes that help animals blend in to group or environment; example = zebras |

| habituation | organism ignores repeated stimulation; baby sleeps while dog is barking |
