Mendel and Genes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Genotype | Genetic makeup of a specific trait |
| Trait | Distinguishing physical characterstics |
| Allele | Different forms of a gene that can occur at the same place on the chromosome |
| Purebred | Line/ Population of organisms that is genetically the same |
| Cross | The mating of two organisims |
| Homozygous | Have 2 of the same alleles for a specific trait |
| Genome | All of an organisms genetic material |
| heterozygous | Have two different alleles for a specific trait |
| Recessive | Allele that is NOT expressed when 2 different alleles are present. Is only expressed when there are 2 copies of it. |
| Locus | The specific position of a gene, the genes address on the chromosome. |
| Dominant | Allele that is expressed when 2 different alleles are present. |
| Phenotype | Physical characteristics or traits of an organism. |
| Genetics | The study of biological inheritance patterns and variation in organisms. |
| Law of Segregation | Law stating the organisms inherit 2 copies of each gene, one from each parent and organisms only give 1 copy of each gene to their offspring. |
| Gene | A piece of DNA that codes traits |
