River Systems

Key terms of a river system

TermDefinition
Watershed The land area that suppies water to a river system
Meander The looping curve formed
Tributaries The smaller stream or river that feeds into the main river
River System a river and all its tributaries together
Erosion The process by which fragments of soil and rock are broken off from the ground surface and carried away
Ox Bow Lake The crescent-shaped cut off body of water that remains
Deposition The process by which soil and rock are left behind
Flood Plain The broad, flat valley through which the river flows
Mouth The point where a river flows into another body of water
Source The place the water from the river comes from
Headwaters The many small streams that come together at the source of a river
