Key terms of a river system

| Watershed | The land area that suppies water to a river system |
| Meander | The looping curve formed |
| Tributaries | The smaller stream or river that feeds into the main river |
| River System | a river and all its tributaries together |
| Erosion | The process by which fragments of soil and rock are broken off from the ground surface and carried away |
| Ox Bow Lake | The crescent-shaped cut off body of water that remains |
| Deposition | The process by which soil and rock are left behind |
| Flood Plain | The broad, flat valley through which the river flows |
| Mouth | The point where a river flows into another body of water |
| Source | The place the water from the river comes from |
| Headwaters | The many small streams that come together at the source of a river |
