Atoms, Molecules, and Life
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Atoms | Smallest unit of matter |
| Element | the same thing as an atom |
| Protons | A positive charge inside an atom |
| Neutrons | A neutral particle inside an atom |
| Electrons | A negatively charged particle on the outer part of an atom/make stable or unstable |
| Ionic | Highly charged unstable bond which is easily broken |
| Polar covalent | slightly charged and stable |
| Non polar covalent | neutral, highly stable bond |
| Free Radicals | A molecule with an unpaired electron, makes it highly unstable and reactive with nearby molecules |
| Antioxidants | Any molecule that reacts with free radicals, neutralizing their ability to damage biological molecules. Fruits and Veggies contain these. |
| Why is it important that water moderates the effects of temperature changes? | It keeps our cells from freezing and boiling due to temp. changes. |
| Why is water as a solvent important | it enables us to get the stored energy from over food and drinks. |
| Acid | a substance that releases hydrogen ions when it dissolves in water |
| Base | A substance that combines with hydrogen ions, reducing their number. |
| pH Scale | Reflects the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution |
| Buffer | They neutralize acids and bases to bring body fluids close to 7 overall. |
