| plaintiff | the party that brings the charges against the accused |
| defendant | individual or group accused of a crime |
| felonies | serious crime such as murder rape kidnapping or robbery |
| misdemeanor | a relatively minor offense such as vandalism or stealing inexpensive items |
| larceny | unlawful taking away of anothers property |
| robbery | taking or property from a persons possession using force or threats |
| burglary | unlawful entry into any dewelling or structure with the intention to commit a crime |
| lawsuit | when a civil case goes to court |
| torts | civil wrongs |
| libel | printing of false and damaging information |
| constitutional law | law dealing with the formation, construction, and interpretation of constitutions |
| stare decisis | practice of using earlier judical rulings as a basis for deciding cases |
| writ of habeas corpus | court order that requires police to bring a prisoner to court to explain why they are holding a person |
| bills of attainer | law that punishes a person accused of a crime w/o trial or fair hearing in court |
| ex post facto laws | laws that punishes a person accused of a crime w/o trial or a fair hearing in court |
| due process of law | means that government may not take our lives, liberty, or property except according to the proper exercise of law |
| search warrant | court order allowing law enforcement officers to search a suspects home or business and take specific items as evidence |
| double jeopardy | putting someone on trail for a crime which he or she was previously acquitted |
| grand jury | group of citizens that decides whether there is sufficient evidence to accuse someone of a crime |
| plea bargaining | negotiation between the defense attorney and the prosecutor |
| bail | sum of money used as a security deposit to ensure that an accused person returns for his or her trail |
