What are the three types of Carbohydrates? Sugars, Starch and Fibre
What is the function of starch in the diet? The slow release of energy
What is the function of fibre in the diet? To prevent constipation or keep digestive system in good working order
What is the function of protein in the diet? Growth and repair of cells
What is the function of fats in the diet? Heat Insulation
What is the function of calcium in the diet? Strong bones and teeth
What is the function of iron in the diet? To keep red blood cells healthy
What is the function of vitamin c in the diet? Prevent scurvy
What is the function of vitamin d in the diet? Strong bones and teeth
List two sources of protein. Chicken, Beans, Nuts
List two sources of starch. Potatoes, Bread, Rice, Pasta
List two sources of vitamin c. Oranges, Lemons, Limes
List two sources of iron. Green vegetables, red meat
What is a balanced diet? A diet that contains the correct amounts of all the food types.
What unit is used to measure energy in food? Joules (Kilojoules)
Energy and nutrients listed on the ingredients labels of food normally list the values per ??? grams. 100
Name the chemical used to test for starch. Iodine
What colour change indicates the presence of starch? Red/Yellow -> Blue/Black
What chemical is used to test for a reducing sugar? Benedict's Solution
What colour change indicates the presence of sugar? Blue -> Brick Red
What chemicals are used to test for protein? Copper Sulphate and Sodium Hydroxide
What colour change indicates the presence of protein? Blue -> Purple
What do we use to test for fats? Brown Paper
How do we indicate the presence of fats on brown paper? Translucent spot on the brown paper
What is the energy conversion that takes place when a peanut is burned? Chemical -> Heat
