|---|---|
| Natural Selection | the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. The theory of its action was first fully expounded by Charles Darwin and is now believed to be the main process that brings about evolution. |
| Evolution | cumulative changes in groups of organisms over time |
| Artificial Selection | is the intentional reproduction of individuals in a population that have desirable traits. In organisms that reproduce sexually, two adults that possess a desired trait — such as two parent plants that are tall — are bred together. |
| Variation | A modification in structure, form or function in an organism, deviating from other organisms of the same species or group. |
| Heritability | is a concept that summarizes how much of the variation in a trait is due to variation in genetic factors. Often, this term is used in reference to the resemblance between parents and their offspring. |
| Overproduction | is the ability of a species to produce far more offspring than can possibly survive |
| Reproductive Advantage | A peculiarity of the reproductive mechanism of a species that results in it being better fitted to its environment (for example, prolonged seed dormancy). |
| Fitness | the ability to survive and reproduce |
| Adaptation | any characteristic that increases fitness |
