BMMS Science Ch 8 - Weather
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Water cycle | the continuous movement of water between the atmosphere and Earth’s surface |
| Evaporation | process by which water molecules in liquid water absorb energy and escape into the air as water vapor |
| Humidity | a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air |
| Relative humidity | the percentage of water vapor that is actually in the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold |
| Psychrometer | used to measure relative humidity; uses a wet bulb and dry bulb thermometer to measure humidity |
| Condensation | the process by which water vapor in the air becomes liquid water |
| Dew point | the temperature at which condensation begins |
| Cirrus | wispy, feathery clouds |
| Cumulus | clouds that look like fluffy, rounded piles of cotton |
| Stratus | clouds that form in flat layers |
| Precipitation | any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth’s surface |
| Air mass | a huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity and air pressure at any given height |
| Tropical | warm air masses from the tropics that have low air pressure |
| Polar | cold air masses that form north of 50 degrees N and 50 degrees S and have high air pressure |
| Maritime | air masses that form over oceans |
| Continental | air masses that form over land |
| Front | the boundary where air masses meet |
| Occluded | when a warm air mass gets cut off from the ground |
| Cyclone | a swirling center of low air pressure |
| Anticyclones | high pressure centers of dry air |
| Storm | violent disturbance in the atmosphere |
| Thunderstorm | a small storm often accompanied by heavy precipitation and frequent thunder and lightning |
| Lightning | a sudden spark, or electric discharge, caused when electrical charges jump between parts of a cloud, or between a cloud and the ground |
| Tornado | rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm cloud to touch Earth’s surface |
| Hurricane | a tropical cyclone that has winds of 119 kph or higher |
| Storm surge | a “dome” of water that sweeps across the coast where the hurricane ends |
| Meteorologist | scientists who study the causes of weather and try to predict it |
| Isobar | lines joining places on the map that have the same air pressure |
| Isotherms | lines joining places that have the same temperature |
