Weather Test
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| climate | average weather over a long period of time |
| weather | conditions of the atmosphere in one place at one time |
| precipitation | water or moisture that falls from the sky |
| dew point | temperature at which water vapor condenses or turn into liquid |
| heat index | "feels-like" temperature |
| jet stream | when two air cells come together they create a fast-flowing "river" of air |
| fujita scale | used to communicate how fast a tornado moves, how strong, or how much damage it caused |
| air mass | air with similar characteristics such as temperature and humidity |
| nor'easter | usually cold, extreme weather from the North East coast |
| maritime polar | weather that is formed over the water in polar regions |
| maritime tropical | weather that is formed over the water in tropical regions |
| continental polar | usually brings dry and cold air masses |
| continental tropical | usually brings dry and hot air masses |
| continental arctic | brings very cold and very dry air |
| coriolis effect | causes winds and waters to move in clockwise patterns in the northern hemisphere and counter clockwise patterns in the southern hemisphere |
| tornado alley | a place in the United States where warm fronts regularly meet cold fronts in dramatic ways |
| cyclone | winds spiraling around a low pressure cell |
