Body Planes

TermDefinition
Body Plane Imaginary flat surface that divides the body into sections
Frontal(coronal) vertical plane that passes through the body longitudinal from head to toe dividing it from front to back
Sagittal vertical plane that passes through the body lengthwise dividing body into right and left sides
Transverse horizontal plane that divides body into upper and lower parts
Body Cavity space that contains internal organs
Dorsal Cavity(posterior,back) Subdivided into the cranial and spinal cavity
Ventral Cavity(anterior,front) subdivided into thoracic and abdominal cavity
Abdominal Cavity subdivided into abdominal and pelvic portions
Visceral pertaining to organs within a cavity
Parietal pertaining to sides or walls of cavity
Peripheral pertaining to outward part of surface
Distal farthest from origin of a part
Proximal nearest the origin of a part
Lateral farther from mid-line towards the side
Posterior/Dorsal towards back of the body
Anterior/Ventral towards front of body
Caudal near lower end of body
Superior above,higher position
Inferior below,lower position
Cranial near the head
Supine face up
Prone face down
Deep away from surface
Superficial on or near the surface
Central pertaining to center
