Biology vocabulary Ch 1 and 2

independent variable the variable deliberatly changed.
dependent variable the variable kept the same throughout the whole process.

ionic bonds atoms/molecules gain or lose electrons.
covelant bonds two or more atoms share electrons.
atom the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
molecule the smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physical and chemical properties of the substance.
compound a substance made of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical means.
element a substance that cannot be seperated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
electron negative, around the nucleus.
neutron neutral, around nucleus.
proton positive, around nucleus.
carb Lugol's Iodine, Benedict's, simple sugars, provide us with energy, bread pasta.
protein Biuret's, amino acid, catalysts transport movement protection immune growth, meat eggs.
lipid Sudan III, fatty acids and glycerol, energy storage and cell structure, oils butter.
nucleic acid nucleotides, direct all cell processes, DNA RNA.
acids pH of 0-7.
bases pH of 7-14.
organic molecules macromolecule and biomolecule. A large molecule made up of many smaller molecules.
Enzymes enzymes are catalysts, which are substances that reduce the activation energy of a chemical reaction.
enzyme: substrate: toothpick-ase:toothpick.
