Identifying Species

These flash cards help you with classification of species.

TermDefinition
Centipede A predatory myriapod invertebrate with a flattened elongated body composed of many segments. Most segments bear a single pair of legs.
Millipede A myriapod invertebrate with an elongated body composed of many segments, most of which bear two pairs of legs. Most kinds are herbivorous and shun light.
Mollusk Includes; snails, slugs, mussels, and octopuses. Most have an outer shell.
Arachnid Includes spiders, harvestmen, mites and ticks. Have eight legs and their bodies are divided into two sections.
Earthworm A tube shaped,segmented animal. They are commonly found living in soil. Feeds on live and dead organic matter.
Tapeworm A flat, segmented worm. They live in the intestines of some animals. Animals can be infected with tapeworms by grazing in pastures or drinking contaminated water.
Leech A segmented worm, that has two suckers at each end. They are bloodsuckers that live mainly in freshwater environments.
Annelids Also called ringed worms. It is a segmented worms. The basic form of the worm consists of 2 parts of their body and they are found in marine environments.
Ticks They are small and round. Ticks are parasites that cling to one spot and do not move. you can find ticks outdoors.
Fleas A small, wingless insect that is flattened side to side. Their spine and legs enable them to jump high. Fleas are parasites that feed off of blood.
