| Lava | erupted magma |
| Viscosity | lavas resistance to flow |
| Aa | lava flows that have surfaces of rough jagged blocks with dangerously sharp edges and spiny projections |
| Pahoehoe | lava flows that exhibit smooth surfaces that sometimes resemble the twisted braids of rope |
| Lava Tubes | cave-like tunnels that were previously conduits for carrying lava from an active vent to the flow’s leading edge |
| Block Lava | flows that consist of blocks with slightly curved, smooth surfaces |
| Fissure | crack in the Earth’s surface as a result of magma moving forcefully towards the surface |
| Conduit | a pipe-like opening through which magma moves towards the Earth’s surface |
| Vent | the surface opening of a conduit |
| Volcanic Cone | a cone shaped structure built by successive eruptions of lava and/or pyroclastic materials |
| Crater | the depression at the summit of a volcano or a depression that is produced by a meteorite impact |
| Parasitic Cone | a volcanic cone that forms on the flank of a larger volcano |
| Fumarole | a vent in a volcanic area from which fumes or gases escape |
| Cinder Cones | a rather small volcano built primarily of ejected lava fragments that consist of mostly pea- to walnut sized lapilli |
| Scoria | vesicular ejecta that is the product of basaltic magma |
| Stratovolcano | a composite cone |
| Pyroclastic Flows | a highly heated mixture, largely of ash and pumice fragments, that travels down the flanks of a volcano or along the surface of the ground |
| Nuee ardente | incandescent volcanic debris buoyed up by hot gases that moves downslope in an avalanche fashion |
| Lahar | a debris flow on the slopes of a volcano that results when unstable layers of ash and debris become saturated and flow downslope, usually following stream channels |
