What is a cell? The basic structural and functional unit of all forms of life.
What is the job of the cell wall? Give shape and protect the plant cell
The cell membrane can best be described as what? A thin structure that separates the cell from its surroundings and controls movement of materials in and out of the cell
The nucleus can be called the what of the cell? The brain. It controls all cell function.
Organisms can be defined as: all living things
What is a life span? a life span is how long something lives. it can vary from seconds to thousands of years
What are the 5 stages of life? beginning, growing, maturing, declining, dying
What is the beginning of life? when life begins, birth
What is the growing stage of life? when young organisms grow quickly by increasing the number & size of cells
Maturing can be defined as: when an organism is fully developed; growth stops but replacement and repair continue
The declining stages is: when an organism begins to lose its ability to maintain itself, aging
What is the dying stage? when life processes stop and death occurs
What are the 9 life processes? movement, respiration, sensation & secretion, circulation, reproduction, excretion, nutrition, growth
What are the parts of the nutrition process? metabolism, ingestion, digestion, absorption, elimination
What's an invertebrate? an animal without a backbone
What is a vertebrate? organims with a backbone
What are the 3 types of symmetry? radial, bilateral, asymmetric
What is the purpose of a backbone? To support the organisms and protect vital organs so that life processes can occur
What is the function of the skeletal system? To support movement and protect organs
What is the function of the digestive system? break down food that is taken into the body and convert it to usable energy
What is the function of the nervous system? communication for the body, brain receives impulses from sensory receptors that are connected to nerves
What is the respiratory system responsible for? transferring oxygen from the air to the bloodstream
What is the circulatory system responsible for? pump and circulate blood and oxygen through the body, collect carbon dioxide and other wastes
