Biology #11

QuestionAnswer
Cilia Hair-like projections that cae cell use movement or push things along
Cytosol watery substance inside of the cell
Flagellum whip-like structure used for movement
Lysosome defend the cell and remove dead materials
Mitochondria produces energy in the cell via cellular respiration
Nucleus control center of the the cell
Vacuoles/Vesicles used for internal storage
Active transport Goes against the concentration gradient to cross the cell membrane
Eucaryotic Type of cell with a nucleus and organelles
Facilitated Diffusion Requires a channel or carrier protein in order to cross the cell membrane
Hypertonic Solution Higher concentration of solutes outside the cell compared to inside
Isotonic Solution Same concentration of solution inside and outside the cell
Metatbolism Overall sum of body processes; rate at which energy is consumed by organisms
Messenger RNA Carries the sequence of codons outside the nucleus for protein synthesis
Ribosomal RNA Where protein assemble occurs
Name one type of cell boundary membrane, wall, OR capsule
What is the energy currency used in the body? ATP
Which type of organism--autotroph or heterotroph--is a producer? autotroph
What is the study of cells called? cytology
OP (optimal point) best possible point of operation, peak performance
OR (optimal range) works well within this specific range (temps, concentrations, etc.
RoT (range of tolerance) cells function, but not very well, performance is falling
LoT (limit of tolerance) cells cannot function any longer and cease to operate
What happens when the solution is too concentrated inside of the cell? more solution must be brought in to balance it out and the cell ruptures from too much fluid being added to the inside
What happens when the solution is too concentrated on the outside of the cell? solution rushes out of the cell to balance the concentration and the cell collapses because there is not enough inside to withstand the pressure
Bonus: How much ATP does the average adult use in one day? 150 kg

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
