things i need to know for the science test

QuestionAnswer
what is sea floor spreading the process by which molten material adds new oceanic crust to the ocean floor.
what is a deep ocean trench? A deep valley along the ocean floor where oceanic crust is slowly sinking under the mantle
What is tension? stress that stretches rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle
what is a transform boundary? A plate boundary where two plates slide past each other
What is a convergent boundary? A plate boundary where two plates move towards each other.
What is the only LIQUID layer of the Earth? the outer core.
Explain Wegener's theory of continental drift. the continents were once all connected in a supercontinent called Pangea, but broke apart forming the continents we know today, 200 million years ago.
what were the three pieces of evidence Wegener Used to support his theory? Fossils, land features, and climate.
what is the lithosphere A rigid layer made up by the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust.
Where do most of volcanoes and earthquakes form? Along the ring of Fire.
What is the difference between quiet and pyroclastic eruptions Quiet tends to be thicker magma that just seeps out and pyroclastic tends to be thinner magma and a more explosive eruption.
What is the difference between P waves and S waves P Waves compress and expand, s waves move from side top side
what state of matter is the Asthenosphere? Semi liquid
What is a divergent boundary A plate boundary where two plates move away from each other
How does Silica influence the type of eruption in the volcano? If it is thick magma, it will most likely be a quiet eruption, if it is thin, it will most likely be a pyroclastic eruption.
what are the main layers of the Earth? Crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
Explain the force that causes plates to move. Convection currents in the mantle.
describe a dike A slab of volcanic rock formed when magma forces itself past rock layers
What is shearing A stress that pushes masses of rock in opposite directions
What is pangea the supercontinent that broke apart 200 million years ago
What causes volcanic ranges to form at a subduction zone? The sea floor spreads and magma steeps through the crack in the earths surface.
What is a mid ocean ridge? A undersea mountain chain where new ocean floor is produced
What is a hot spot? An area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust above it.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
