| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| alveoli | small air sacs in the lungs. oxygen exchange in the lungs takes place |
| aortic bodies | measures changes in blood pressure and the composition of arterial blood flowing past it, including the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide and pH. |
| bronchi | main passageway into the lungs |
| bronchioles | passages in the respiratory system that begin at the end of the bronchi |
| carbaminohemoglobin | A compound of carbon dioxide and hemoglobin, which is one of the forms in which carbon dioxide exists in the blood |
| carbonic anhydrase | family of enzymes that catalyze the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water to bicarbonate and protons (or vice versa) |
| carotid bodies | The carotid body detects changes in the composition of arterial blood flowing through it, mainly the partial pressure of oxygen, but also of carbon dioxide |
| diaphragm | performs an important function in respiration: as the diaphragm contracts, the volume of the thoracic cavity increases and air is drawn into the lungs. |
| exhalation | flow of the respiratory current OUT of the organism |
| external respiration | Exchange of gas between air in alveoli and blood |
| inhalation | flow of air INTO an organism |
| internal respiration | Exchange of gas between systemic capillaries and tissues |
| larynx | Passageway for air between pharynx and trachea |
| oxyhemoglobin | oxygenated blood in arteria |
| pharynx | Connects nasal and oral cavities to larynx |
| pleural membrane | double layered membrane that is held together and covers the lungs |
| reduced hemoglobin | the form of hemoglobin in red blood cells after the oxygen of oxyhemoglobin is released in the tissues. |
| medulla oblongata | contains the cardiac, respiratory, vomiting and vasomotor centers and so deals with the autonomic (involuntary) functions, of breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. |
| stretch receptors | distention of various organs and muscles, and are neurologically linked to the medulla in the brain stem via afferent nerve fibers |
| thoracic cavity | the chamber of the human body (and other animal bodies) that is protected by the thoracic wall |
| trachea | Connects larynx with primary bronchi, supported by C-shaped cartilage rings |
