LD BIO CH 38 BIOMES OF THE EARTH

TermDefinition
BIOME A large geographical region that has a particular type of climax community
TUNDRA Low avg temp (alpine & arctics); Completely frozen ground during winter; Frozen ground permafrost; mammals - arctic foxes, arctic horses, & caribou/birds, arctic loons, snowy owls, ptarmigans; Vegetation limited to lichens, mosses, grasses, sedges, shrubs
PERMAFROST The lower layers in the tundra that remain in frozen throughout the year.
TAIGA A biome with cold winters and warm, moist summers; climax flora are evergreen vegetation. Animals-moose, wolves, bears, wolverines, foxes, porcupines, deer, lynx, beavers; Plants - pines, furs and spur trees.
DECIDUOUS FOREST A biome in which the climax vegetation is deciduous trees; characterized by hot, humid, summers summers and cold winters
GRASSLANDS A type of biome in which there isn't enough rainfall to support trees and the dominant form of vegetation is grasses; prairies. Animals-Africa (aardvark, elephant, giraffe, zebra, hippo & dingo), NA (elks, bumble bee, & lady beetles). 25 to 75 cm of rain
DESERTS Type of biome in which there is too little rainfall to support trees or grasses; may show great variation in temperature between day and night. Plants - cacti; Animals - Dingos, armadillos, camels, snakes & scorpions.
TROPICAL RAIN FORESTS Climate 75 to 80/200 to 400 cm of rain; 100 or more different species; Animals - Birds, reptiles, & mammals
TERRESTRIAL BIOMES Tundra, Taiga, Deciduous Forest, Grasslands, Deserts, & Tropical Rain Forest.
AQUATIC BIOMES Fresh Water & Marine
MARINE BIOME Cover 3/4s of the Earth; Animals -Sharks & Fish; Stable temperature varies with latitude; Have algae; Most organisms in the world
BENTHOS Organisms that live on the ocean floor
PLANKTON Organisms that float in a body of water
PHYTOPLANKTON Photosynthetic organisms that float near the surface of the water
ZOOPLANKTON Small animals and non photosynthetic protists that float near the surface of the water
NEKTON Free swimming marine organisms
INTERTIDAL ZONE Area along the ocean shoreline that is covered by water at high tide and uncovered at low tide
LITTORAL ZONE Area between the intertidal zone and the continental shelf; the water is relatively shallow and light reaches the ocean floor.
FRESHWATER BIOME Divided into two types (Running Water (Streams) & Standing Water (Lakes, Ponds, swamps & bogs); Volume of water is much smaller than the marine biome. Ameba, Ants, Beaver, Frogs, Flamingos, Swans, Alligators, bobcats, flies, earthworms, turtle.
