Evolution

Evolution Terms

TermMeaning
Species A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring
Adaptation A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce
Evolution Any process of change over time
Natural Selection Individuals with variations thath make them better adapted to their environment will survive
Overproduction Species produce more offspring than can can survive
Variation Differences between individuals of the same species
How a new species forms? When a group of individuals remains separated from the rest of its species long enough to accumulate different traits
How fossils form? When organisms become buried under sediments after they die
Petrified Remains of organisms that are actually changed to rock
Mold A mold forms when hard parts of an organism buried by sediments are gradually dissolved
