| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| species | group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring |
| Adaptation | a genetic trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce |
| Evolution | change in a species over time |
| Natural Selection | process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species |
| How a new species forms | when a group of individuals remainds separated from the rest of its species long enough to accumulate different traits |
| How fossils form | most form when organisms become buried under sediments after they die |
| Petrified fossils | fossils that form after remains are buried in sediment |
| Mold | a hollow space in a sediment in the shape of an organism or part of an organism is called a mold |
| Relative Dating | used to determine which of two fossils is older |
| Absolute Dating | used to determine the actual age of a fossil |
| Variation | difference between individuals of the same species |
| Selection | concept that some variations make individuals better adapted to their environment |
| Overproduction | Producing far more offspring than can possibly survive |
| Radioactive Dating | Dating that finds the age of the rocks surrounding the fossils to find the age of the fossils |
| Half-life | the time it takes for half of the atoms in a sample of radioactive elements to decay |
| fossil record | the millions of fossils that scientists have collected |
| extinct | when no members of that species are still alive |
| gradualism | idea that proposed that evolution occurs slowly but steadily |
| punctual equilibria | the idea that states that species change a lot during short periods of time, then have a long period of little or no change |
| causes of extinction | Natural events, and human activities |
| Branching Tree | diagram that shows how scientists think different groups of organisms are related |
