termdefinition
ecology the study of the interactions of organisms with other organisms and their environment
biotic factor living part of an enviroment
abiotic factor non-living part of enviroment (don't confuse with dead)
population all the same species that live in a specific area
community all the populations in a specific area
ecosystem a community + the abiotic factors in the area
biome a large area of similar ecosystems
biosphere area that can support life, on and around earth
species any group that can breed & produce fertile offspring
producer makes own nutrients, like a plant, usually using photosynthesis
consumer eats other things to survive
herbivore a type of consumer that eats only plants
carnivore type of consumer that eats only meat
omnivore type of consumer that eats both plants and meat
decomposer get energy by breaking down long dead thinggs
food chain the path of energy showing feeding pattern, simple
food web shows the feeding relationship between organisms in a ecosystem, complex
energy pyramid triangulear diagram that shows the loss of energy as you move up each trophic level also shows the level of biomass at each trophic level
carrying capacity the largest population an environment can support
prey the thing being hunted
predator the thing hunting
symbiosis any of three types of relationships in which 2 differnt organisms live in close contact with each other
competition fighting for limited resources within your own species or organisms that need similar things
mutualism a type of symbiotic relationship where both species get a benifit (flower & bee)
commensalism a type of symbiotic relationship where one gets a benifit and the other is neither helped or hurt (shark & remora)
parasitism a type of symbiotic relationship where one species gets what it wants and the other gets hurt or even dead (dog and flea)the one getting hurt is called the HOST, the other the parasite
primary succession the order in which living things move onto newly formed land
secondary succession the order in which living things move into land after a disaster OR after developed land falls into disuse (think LIFE AFTER PEOPLE)
Water cycle water is not created or lost, but can change forms and cycles through our enviroment
Carbon cycle how carbon flows through the enviroment, important because we are all CARBON BASED LIFE FORMS
nitrogen cycle how nitrogen cycles through our environment, necessary for plant growth and life

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
