Study Guide

QuestionAnswer
List all the examples of local winds. Land breeze, sea breeze, mountain breezes, and valley breezes.
What are auroras and where are they found? Auroras are polar winds.
Our ozone layer absorbs which type of harmful radiation from the sun? UV (ultraviolet) rays
How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air?
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? Trade winds
What are the 2 most abundant gases found in the air? Oxygen and carbon dioxide
Describe air pressure The amount of air molecules around an object.
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases? Air pressure decreases.
Describe jet streams. Winds that travel globally. Planes use these.
What is the greenhouse effect? It traps heat in our atmosphere.
Explain the 3 ways that heat is transferred. Conduction, by touching heat or cold, convection, by being near heat or cold, and radiation, where the heat or cold sends rays of heat or cold.
Where do trade winds flow toward? West
What does the Coriolis effect make the winds do? Blow in circular patterns.
Describe the doldrums. An area near 30 degrees latitude north and south and has little wind.
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? A layer of certain properties that protect the Earth from the sun's ultraviolet rays.
Describe the thermosphere. The hottest layer in the atmosphere and found between the mesosphere and the stratosphere.
What is the most common atmospheric gas? Nitrogen
What parts of the earth cools off faster and heats up faster? What does this unequal heating create? Land cools and warms up faster.
What is smog? When ozone and vehicle exhaust react with sunlight
Describe the movement of convection currents. In a circular pattern.
Which instrument measures air pressure? Barometer
What is significant about the troposphere? There is weather and we live in it.
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? Vehicle exhaust and burning fossil fuels.
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Altitude
What does the name of a wind tell you? Where it blows.
How much of the sun’s energy actually reaches the Earth? 2 billionths
What property are the layers of the atmosphere based on? Oxygen
Which calm are is located around 30 degrees north and south latitudes? Doldrums
What is the atmosphere? Different layers that are based one property, oxygen.
List the three global winds and the two calm areas. Global Winds:Polar easterlies, Westerlies, and Trade Winds Calm areas: Doldrums and Horse Latitudes
What is global warming? When the greenhouse effect traps too much heat in our atmosphere.
If air mass increases, what happens to density? It will increase.
What type of winds blow over short distances? Local winds
How are winds created? The Earth's rotation causes wind.
