QuestionAnswer
List the examples of local winds Polar easterlies westerlies easterlies
What are auroras and where are they found? Shimmering lights found in the ionosphere (thermosphere)
Our ozone layer absorbs which type of harmful radiation from the sun? Thermal gasses
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? Westerlies
What are the 2 most abundant gases found in the air? Nitrogen and oxygen
Describe air pressure Gravity pulls molecules to the surface causing air pressure
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases? Air pressure decreases
Describe jet streams They are fast movement of streams that can track storms that are coming
What is the greenhouse effect? Process by which gasses in the atmosphere absorb thermal energy
Explain the 3 ways that heat is transfered Convection-energy through a liquid or gas Conduction-material is heated by direct contact Radiation-EM waves ( can't touch)
Where do trade winds flow toward? The equator
What does the Coriolis Effect make the winds do? It produces patterns of circulation
Describe the doldrums Trade winds from the northern and southern hemisphere meet up in an area around the equator
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? The outside surrounding layer around earth that protects us from ultra violent rays from the sun The ousted layer of the earth
Describe the thermosphere Uppermost layer of the atmospheretempurature increases here due to the suns radiation
What parts of the earth cools off faster and heats up faster? At the poles it cools faster and at the equator it warms up faster
What does this unequal heating create? Wind precipitation and clouds
What is smog? A fog that is combined with smoke and other industrial pollutants
Describe the movement of convection currents It goes in a pattern of circulation
Which instrument measures air pressure? Barometer
What is significant about the troposphere? Weather happens there
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? Burning fossil fuels because of cars and factorization
What is another name for the distance above sea shore? Shoreline
What are globals winds? Winds that blows causing ripples in surface water covered global winds from the equator and back
What does the name of wind tell you? Where they are going
How much of the suns energy actually hits the earth? 2 billionths
What property are the atmosphere layers based on ? Temperature
Which calm area located around 30 degrees north and south latitude? Horse latitudes
What is the atmosphere? A mixture of gasses that surround the earth's layer
List 3 global winds and 2 calm areas Westerlies polar easterlies doldrums horse latitudes trade winds
What is global warming? Increase in greenhouse gasses in atmosphere may have caused this increase in temperature
If air mass increases what happens to density? Density decreases
What type of winds blow over short distances? Trade winds
How are all winds created? The movement of air caused by differences in air pressure
How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air? O=21% CO2=less than 1%
Which global winds blows away from the poles to the west? Polar easterlies
What is the most atmospheric gas? Nitrogen
Describe the movement of convection currents? With a heat source cold sinking dense air pushes warm light less dense air continuing in a cycle
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Elevation and altitude
