Question | Answer |
---|---|
List the examples of local winds. | land and sea breezes |
Our ozone layer absorbs which type of harmful radiation from the sun? | Ultraviolet radiation |
How much carbon dioxide is found in our air? | less than 1 % |
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? | Polar easterlies |
What are the 2 most abundant gases found in the air? | nitrogen and oxygen |
Describe air pressure. | force exerted on a surface by the weight of air above the surface |
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases? | Air pressure decreases |
Describe jet streams. | fast flowing narrow air currents found in the atmosphere that move our weather from west to east |
Explain the 3 ways that heat is transferred. | convection, radiation, and conduction |
Where do the trade winds blow? | North and south of the equator. Winds blow consantly |
What does the Coriolis Effect make the winds do? | Appear to curve because of the rotation of the Earth |
Describe the doldrums. | near equator with very little wind movement |
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? | The ozone layer is the deep layer in the stratosphere. |
Describe the thermosphere. | Its the biggest and warmest layer out of all the layers in the atmosphere. |
What is the most common atmospheric gas? | nitrogen |
What parts of the earth cools off faster and heats up faster? What does this unequal heating create? | Land. it creates wind and generates low and high density. |
What is significant about the troposphere? | Without the troposphere we wouldn't have oxygen to breathe and we wouldn't have clouds either because they occur in the troposphere also. |
What are global winds? | Global winds cover the entire earth. They can be broken down into 4 wind belt systems. Polar easterlies, westerlies, trade winds, and doldrums. |
What property are the layers of the atmosphere based on? | temperature |
What is the atmosphere? | Thin layer of air that protects the Earth |
How are all winds created? | Uneven heating and cooling of Earth |
What drives the water cycle? | The Sun |
What are the steps of the water cycle? | Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, run-off. |
Where does most run-off end up? | the Oceans |
