How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air? Oxygen-21% Carbon Dioxide- Less than 1%
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? Polar Easterlis
What are the two most abundant gases found in the air? Nitrogen and Oxygen
Describe air pressure. A mixture of invisible gases the push down on us.
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases? Air pressure decreases
Describe jet streams. A belt of high speed winds that blow in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.
What is the greenhouse effect? When gases in the air Absorb thermal energy
Explain the three ways heat is transferred. Conduction, Convection, and Radiation
Where do trade winds flow toward? The equator
What does the Coriolis Effect make the winds do? Turn or curve
Describe the doldrums. An area around the equator where trade winds meet.
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? It protects us from harmful UV rays; found in the Stratosphere
Describe the Thermosphere. The layer of the atmosphere that is the hottest
What is the most common atmospheric gas? Nitrogen
What parts of Earth cools off faster and heats up faster? What does this unequal heating create? Land heats and cools faster compared to land; creates wind
What is smog? A mixture of smoke and fog
Describe the movement of convection currents. They move up and down, from warm to cool
Which instrument measures air pressure? Barometer
What is significant about the troposphere? We live here; weather occurs here
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? Burning fossil fuels and driving
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Altitude or elevation
What are global winds? The combination of convection cells found at every 30 degrees of latitude and the Coriolis effect of air circulation is called global winds.
What does the name of a wind tell you? Where it came from
How much of the sun's energy actually reaches Earth? Two-billionths
What property are the layers of the atmosphere based on? Temperature
Which calm area is located around 30 degrees north and south latitude? Horse latitudes
What is the atmosphere? A mixture of gases that surround the Earth
List the 3 global winds and 2 calm areas. Global winds-Westerlies,Polar Easterlies, and Trade winds/Calm Areas- Horse latitudes and doldrums
What is global warming? An increase in average global temperature
If air mass increases what happens to density? It increases
