Genetics Intro Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
What is genetics? Genetics is the science of genes, variation, and heredity that is in living organisms. It is also the process of an inheritance of a trait from parents to the offspring, such as the molecular structure.
What are genes? When some hereditary is transferred from a part to an offspring. It is what helps the offspring have certain characteristics.
What are alleles? Different forms of a gene that arises by mutation and they are found at the same place on the chromosome.
What is a trait? A feature that an organism has.
What is a punnett square? A diagram that helps predict the outcome of a certain cross or breeding investigation. It is used to help give the probability of an offspring having a certain genotype.
What is homozygous? An organism that has two copies of the same allele for a trait that is at almost the same spot.
What is a phenotype? It is a trait that is commonly in use, but doesn't state the trait it is a part of.
What is a genotype? The genetic makeup of an organism that has to do with a specific characteristic.
