QuestionAnswer
List the examples of local winds? Land and sea breezes.
What are auroras and where are they found? Shimmering lights. In the ionosphere which is in the thermosphere.
Our ozone layer absorbs which type of harmful radiation from the sun? Ultra Violet rays.
How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air? Oxygen takes up 21% while carbon dioxide takes up less than one.
Which global wind blows away from the poles? Polar Easterlies.
What are the 2 most abundant gases found in the air? Nitrogen and oxygen
Describe air pressure. The measure of force with which air molecules push on a surface.
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases? Air pressure decreases.
Describe jet streams. Narrow belts of high speed winds. Found in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.
What is the greenhouse effect? Gases in the atmosphere that absorb the thermal energy.
Explain the 3 ways heat is transferred. Convection, thermal radiation, and conduction.
Where do trade winds flow? Toward the equator.
What does the Coriolis Effect make winds do? Due to the earths rotation winds and currents are caused to curve.
Describe the doldrums. Low pressure around the equator.
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? In the stratosphere and protects us from harmful U.V. rays.
Describe the thermosphere. The layer of the atmosphere that is furthest from the earth, and it's the hottest layer.
What is the most common atmospheric gas? Nitrogen.
What part of the earth cools off faster and heats up faster? What does this unequal heating create? Land heats up and cools down faster.
What is smog? A mixture of the ozone, the sun, and exhaust.
Describe the movement of convection currents? The cycle of warm air rising and cold air sinking.
Which instrument measures air pressure? Barometer.
What is significant about the troposphere? Gives us oxygen so we can live.
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? Humans cause pollution by burning fossil fuels, car exhaust, and using products with chemicals inside them.
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Altitude.
What are global winds? Winds that cover a large area.
What does the name of wind tell you? What direction it flows or where it takes place.
How much of the suns energy actually touches the earth? 2 billionth.
What property are the layers of the atmosphere based on? Temperature.
Which calm area is located around 30 degrees north and south latitude? Horse latitudes.
What is the atmosphere? The layers of gases surrounding the earth.
List the three global winds and the 2 calm areas? Westerlies, easterlies, trade winds, horse latitude, and doldrums.
What is global warming? The increase in earths overall temperature.
If air mass increases what happens to density? Decreases.
What type of winds blow over short distances? Local winds.
How are all winds created? Differences in air pressure.
