QuestionAnswer
List the examples of local winds. Mountain,Sea,Land, and Valley breezes.
What are auroras and where are they found? Auroras are shimmering lights formed by ions that radiate energy. Found in upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere.
Our ozone layer absorbs which type of harmful radiation from the sun? Ultra Violet Light
How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air? 21% oxygen and 1% Carbon Dioxide
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? Polar Easterlies
What are the 2 abundant gases found in the air? Oxygen and Nitrogen
Describe air pressure. The amount of air molecules pushed on a surface.
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases. Air pressure decreases as altitude increases.
Describe jet streams. Narrow bands of strong winds that blow in the upper troposhere.
What is the greenhouse effect? The warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of Earth that occurs when water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases absorb and reradiate thermal energy.
Where do trade winds flow toward? The equator.
What does the Coriolis Effect make the winds do? Curve
Describe the doldrums. Very little wind, dull, and trade winds meet there.
What is the ozone layer? Layer in the stratosphere that blocks out U.V rays. Layer of oxygen.
Where is the ozone layer found? In the Stratosphere.
Describe the thermosphere. Uppermost layer of atmosphere. Temperature increases due to solar radiation. Aurora Boralis occurs here.
Explain how Radiation transfers heat. Transfers energy through electromagnetic waves.
Explain how Conduction transfers heat. Transfer energy through direct contact.
Explain how Convection transfers heat. Transfers energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas.
What is the most common atmospheric gas? Nitrogen
What parts of the earth cools off faster and heats up faster? Land cools off and heats up faster.
What does unequal heating create? Winds
What is smog? Polluted air that forms when sunlight reacts with ozone and exaust.
Describe the movement of Convection Currents. A circular momement.
Which instrument measures air pressure? Barmometer
What is significant about the troposphere. Weather occurs here and we live in it.
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? Burning of fossil fuels, exhaust, and chemicals.
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Altitude or elevation
What are global winds? Winds that blow long distances.
What does the name of a wind tell you? Where the wind is coming from.
How much of the sun's energy actually reaches the earth? 2 billionthes.
What Property are the layers of the atmosphere based on? Based on the temperature changes.
Which calm area is located around 30 degrees north and south latitude? Horse Latittudes
What is the atmosphere? Mixture of gases that surround Earth.
List the 3 global winds and the 2 calm areas. Polar Easterlies, Westerlies, and Trade Winds. Horse Lattitudes and Doldrums.
What is global warming? A gradual increase in average global temperatures.
If air mass increase what happens to density? Also increases.
What type of winds blow over short distances? Local Winds.
How are all winds created? Unequal heating of earths surface.
