How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air? 21% oxygen and 1% carbon dioxide
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? westerlies
What are the two most abundent gases found in the air? nitrogen and oxygen
Describe air pressure. The measure of the force with which air molecules push on a surface
What happens to air pressure as altitude increases There is lower air pressure.
Describe jet streams. a narrow band of strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere
What is the greenhouse effect? the warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of Earth that occurs when water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other gases absorb and reradiate thermal energy
Explain the 3 ways that heat is transferred. Convection, conduction, and radation
Where do trade winds flow toward? They curve to the west at the northern hemisphere
What does the Coriolis Effect make the winds do? It makes them curve
Describe the doldrums. a calm area with very little winds
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? A layer that protects us from UV rays, found in the thermosphere
Describe the thermosphere. Its the hottest layer and there are many gases that react and mix together
What is the most common atmospheric gas? nitrogen
What parts of the earth cools off faster and heats up faster? What does this unequal heating create? This creates global warming
What is smog? this is when vehicle exhaust gets trapped by sunlight and creates a cloud of pollution
Describe the movement of convection currents. It moves in circular patterns
Which instrument measures air pressure? barometer
What is significant about the troposphere? We live in it and lots of weather happens here
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? Burning fossil fuels and creating exhaust
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Altitude
What are global winds? Winds that circle all around the world
What does the name of a wind tell you? Air flowing through objects
