QuestionAnswer
What is smog? Smog is a mixture of smoke and fog
How are all winds created? Global winds
What is the atmosphere? A mixture of gases that protects us from U.V. rays and other space objects
Describe air pressure Air pressure is the amount of weight of air above of you
What kind of ways have humans created air pollution? People burn fossil fuels and their cars run on gas causing car exhaust.
What does the Coriolis Effect make the wind do? It causes winds to curve in different paths.
What happens to air pressure when the altitude increases? The air pressure decreases because you are higher in the air so their is less pressure on you.
List examples of local winds Sea breeze and land breeze
What are auroras and where are they found? An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude regions caused by the collision of energy found in the thermosphere
Our ozone layer absorbs which type of harmful radiation from the sun? Ultra-violet rays
How much oxygen and carbon dioxide is found in our air? 21% oxygen and .5% carbon dioxide
Which global wind blows away from the poles to the west? Polar easterlies
What are the 2 most abundant gases found in the air? Oxygen and Nitrogen
Describe jet streams Jet streams are the things that planes fly in. They are found in the upper troposphere and the lower stratosphere.
What is the greenhouse effect? Its a process that keeps the earth warm
Explain the 3 ways heat is transfered Convection, conduction, and radiation are the three transfers of heat. Radiation is the gas or steam that comes out of the heat. Conduction is the physical touching of the heat transfering and convection is the movement of the heat.
Where do trade winds flow toward? Equator
Describe the doldrums Doldrums are trade winds of the Northern and Southern hemisphere and meet in an area around the equator.
What is the ozone layer? Where is it found? The ozone layer is a layer that protects us from Ultra- Violet rays and is found in the thermosphere
Describe thermosphere The thermosphere is have the highest temperature which is very hot because "Thermo" means heat. The auroras are also found there.
What is the most common atmospheric gas? Nitrogen is the most common gas
What parts of the earth cools off and heats up faster? What does this unequal heating create? Land cools creates wind faster
What is another name for the distance above sea level? Altitude and Elevation
Describe the movement of convection currents Heat source cold sinking dense air during warm
What instrument measures air pressure? Barometer
What is so significant about the troposphere? Weather occurs
What are global winds? Combination of convection cells at every 30 degrees latitude
What does the name of a wind tell you? Where its coming from
How much of the sun's energy actually reaches the Earth? 30%
What property are the layers of the atmosphere based on?
Which calm area is located around 30 degrees north and south latitude? Horse Latitudes
List the three global winds and two calm areas Polar easterlies, westerlies, trade winds, doldrums, horse latitudes
What is global warming? Global warming is the increase in average global temperature
If air mass increases what happens to density? Density decreases
What type of winds blow over short distances? Local winds
