air mass a large body of air that shares such similar properties as pressure, temperature, and humidity
air pressure the force applied on an area by the surrounding air molecules
atmosphere Earth's air; a relatively thin layer of gasses, solids and liquids that surround the planet
chlorofluorocarbon a group of chemical compounds responsible for destroying ozone (CFC)
condensation process of changing from a gas (water vapor)to a liquid
convection transfer of heat by the flow of material (remember
dew point the temperature at which air is saturated and condensation forms
evaporation process of changing from a liquid to a gas
front the boundary between 2 air masses of different density, moisture, or temperature
Greenhouse Effect natural heating that occurs when certain gases in Earth's atmosphere trap heat
humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
hurricane a large swirling low pressure system that forms over the warm ocena (also known as a typhoon or a cyclone)
hydrosphere all of the water on the Earth's surface
isobar a line drawn on a weather map connecting points of equal barometric pressure
isotherm a line drawn on a weather map connecting points of equal temperature
meteorologist a person who studies weather and its impact on the world
meterology the study of weather
ozone layer the layer of the stratosphere responsible for absorbing most of the sun's harmful UV radiation
precipitation water falling from clouds
radiation Energy transferred by waves or rays (like the sun)
relative humidity measure of the amount of water in the air compared to the amount needed for saturation at a specific temperature
station model a set of symbols used on a weather map to indicate weather conditions at a specifc location
tornado a violent, whirling wind that moves in a narrow path over land
weather the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place
