Weather Influences
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| California current | A cool ocean current bringing cool air to the coast of California |
| Solar energy | The primary source of weather energy |
| Doldrums | A low pressure system at or near the equator. Stormy weather occurs here. |
| Horse latitudes | High pressure systems 30 degrees north and south latitudes. Calm clear weather. |
| Greenhouse effect | Solar energy is "trapped" by the gasses in the atmosphere |
| Solar energy on land and sea | Land warms and cools faster than ocean or any other large body of water |
| Ocean surface currents | Ocean surface currents could bring warm or cool waters to other parts of Earth, resulting in warm or cooler air |
| Tropical region | Between 0 and 30 degrees north and south latitudes, receives the most energy from the sun, trade winds |
| Temperate region | Between 30 and 60 degrees north and south latitudes, "middle" of the Northern or Southern Hemispheres, westerlies |
| Polar region | Between 60 and 90 degrees north and south latitudes receives the least of the energy from the sun. Easterlies |
| Convection ocean currents | Warm ocean surface currents will flow toward the north, cool ocean currents flow south |
| Convection air cells | Warm air rises, moves toward the north where it gets cooler, sinks, then moves to warmer area. The prevailing winds are huge convection air cells |
| Gulf Stream | An ocean current bringing warm waters and temperatures along the eastern coast of the US and toward England |
| Climate | The condition of the atmosphere over a large area over a long period of time |
| Latitudes | Imaginary lines drawn to show distances north and south of the equator |
| Weather | The condition of the atmosphere over a small area and a short period of time. |
