| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Warm front | Warm air mass rides over a cole air mass, may produce long periods of precipitation and later, warmer temperatures |
| Cold front | Cold air mass slides under a warm air mass, may produce thunderstorms, heavy precipitation, sometimes tornadoes, then cooler temperatures |
| Stationary front | Neither the cold air mass nor the warm air mass moves along the frontal boundary, may produce long periods of precipitation |
| Occluded front | When a Cold air mass pushes a warm air mass with cool air behind it, the warm air rushes above the cooler air masses, and long periods of precipitation may occur |
| High pressure system | Signals more fair weather. Winds circle clockwise around the high pressure system. |
| Low pressure system | Counterclockwise winds often result in rainy and/or stormy weather |
| Tornado | Low pressure system . A rapidly whirling funnel shaped cloud extending down from a storm cloud, could causes great damage. Tornadoes form on land. |
| Hurricane | A low pressure tropical storm that forms over warm ocean water |
| Isobars | Lines on a weather map showing different air pressure zones |
| Station model | Symbols that provide information that can be used to predict weather patterns |
| Radar | Images that can be used to detect cloud cover, rainfall, storm location, as well as potential for severe weather |
| Rain gauge | Used to measure precipitation in inches or centimeters |
| Barometer | Used to measure air pressure in inches of mercury or millibars |
| Anemometer | Used to measure wind speed |
| Sling psychrometer | A two thermometer tool used to measure relative humidity using a relative humidity table or chart |
| Wind vane | An instrument used to show wind direction |
